from 1:44 (thanks catts for the translation  )
Reporter: Why are you so upset?
Zhenya: I am not upset (laugh). It is just that I am happy to perform here … It (refers to the victory) was due to great coaching, constant perseverance, constant criticism, always …

This is an old news video for EC Baku 2007…I found it by chance.
For a very long time I have been dying to seach “Ribbon Award Ceremony of EC Baku 2007”
Casuse I want to watch Zhenya’s very emotional moment on podium.
But pity, this news clip didn’t have ribbon award ceremony, only a short Zhenya’s interview (1:44-2:00)
Can see she just cried, she was

trembling when she was talking…
This was her first achievement and she was so young then…I miss that time of her
and that very beautiful and classic ribbon routine-Walls of Akendora

Evgenia Kanaeva: “Nerves disturb Rhythmic Gymnastics”

Evgenia Kanaeva: “Nerves disturb Rhythmic Gymnastics”

Author: Olga Minailo (Russian)
Translator and editor: catts (English)
Published on 01-12-2010 at http://www.omsk.aif.ru/sport/article/16362

For three years, this fragile-looking but smiling girl from Siberia has set herself apart as the best gymnast in the world. She has won all prestigious competitions which she has taken part in. It seems, for Evgenia Kanaeva, nothing in RG is impossible.

Someone calls her victories a phenomenon, other explains that her medals were won by an unique talent together with luck. However, Zhenya herself does not think so.

‘I don’t have the most ideal natural ability for RG as I don’t have very long legs,’ The OG champion laughed, ‘I just do not know about taking breaks but doing what I madly love doing.’

After the recent WC in Moscow, Evgenia  returned to her hometown victoriously. She does not mind the Siberian cold. Cold? Of course, it is winter after all!

With the tournament ‘Galina Gorenkova’ starting on December 2 in the SKK, Blinov – correspondent of the AIF in Omsk – visited the training session of the young “artists” and talked with our champion on the ups and downs durin the WC.

She grew up among the stars
Reporter: Zhneya, endless flights, addresses and changing time zones are indeed a crazy load for a 20-year-old’s body. Have you got used to them already?
Kanaeva: And there is no vacation in our sport. If one does not practice for a month, all ligaments would have become ossified upon returning to the hall. Not all gymnasts have amazing natural ability, such as Amina Zaripova. These people, even ten years with no training, are still able to jump higher than everyone else and do splits perfectly. But these are the exceptions. Therefore, recreation for gymnasts lasts maximum two weeks. Yes, and you have got used to the workloads since early childhood. Practice for a new RG routine usually takes 8-9 hours a day for a month. If everything is rehearsed, then 2-3 hours. But it happens only when everything goes smoothly.

Reporter: What if something goes wrong?
Kanaeva: Then you will stay in the hall and continue. As a child, it had happened that I trained from 6 o’clock onward in the morning. It was in Novogorsk, when Irina Viner somehow selected me for competitions – a permission that was not applied to everyone, and young gymnasts were excluded. I got up early in the morning to practice the elements in order not to disturb the senior girls who were preparing for competitions. There was only Irina Tchachina in the hall. So, I can say, I grew up among the stars.

Reporter: You see, that you eventually become the star of RG. Was it clear at once?
Kanaeva: Generally speaking, I could not have become a gymnast. Mom was against me taking up this sport. She also likes RG but it was difficult (for her to let me do it). My grandmother took me to the first training session when I was 5. And then my mom saw that it was not so terrible – I had the softness in my body, and training was pleasurable. But no one thought about it becoming the work for my life.

Reporter: Didn’t you mind that your childhood was spent in a hall on the carpets?
Kanaeva: No. At the age of 7-10, you are “energiser”. You don’t pay any attention on all these difficult work, such as running, pulling and training. Stretching ligaments is indeed a very painful process. Girls cry, but the stretch is needed. However, after all, not everyone can be “stretched”. Therefore, it is necessary to primarily work with those who have more ability for gymnastics. Having said that, the “hard” girls can do sharp turns better, while not all the “soft” ones can become gymnasts – they are like “sausages” (catts’ comment: means, it takes  time to choose). These are the secrets of our sport.

Tears – not because of medals
Reporter: All athletes dream to take part in competitions. How old was the small Zhenya Kanaeva when her dream came true?
Kanaeva: The Russian Championship, for the little girls, could be something absolutely remote and inaccessible. The competition itself, though, is fantastic. I was 11 years old when I took part in the first serious competition. It was the Russian Championship and I took … 45th place. But it was not a bad result as there were more than 100 people and almost all girls were older than me.

Reporter: Now the world seems to think that nothing in RG is impossible for you …
Kanaeva: They are wrong. The hardest thing in this sport is the nerves, which should be made of iron. It is impossible to step onto the carpets without feeling nervous. Therefore, each item should be worked out during training so that the gymnast would feel like a “machine”, capable of completing the entire routine without any error. To learn how to ‘cope-with’ sometimes is more difficult than to learn doing a complicated element.

Reporter: If the nerves of the athletes are so much being kept under control, then does it also refer to the emotions? Do you often cry while standing on the podium?
Kanaeva: Usually, you think, “thank God, it’s over!” But to cry is not because there is a medal hanging around the neck. And it is not even because you have become the best. The important thing is to know that there are people who were close to you giving you their hearts and souls.

Reporter: Zhenya, what about the young gymnasts? Are they chasing after you closely?
Kanaeva: Competition exists even when you are so small. When you are able to perform beautifully, talented and a long-legged girl with the perfect natural ability, of course there are greater opportunities. Competition is necessary for the athletes to learn from each other. However, if, at a professional level, the person above you scored all ten goals, then it is not a competition but a hindrance.

Reporter: However, as not all gymnastics stars are talented and long-legged “swallows”, where do they disappear to?
Kanaeva: If you take the lead for 10 years, this does not mean that you will continue to remain at the same level. You can fly like an arrow, and can also rapidly fall. Coordination will change, there will be injuries … RG, like any sport, is very prone to injury. I also had injuries, but I try not to talk about them. Thank God, I am alive and well.

Reporter: 20, for a gymnast, is a rather solid age. How much longer do you plan to do RG?
Kanaeva: Recently, there was a gymnast who quited RG when she turned 29. I do not know what will happen next. It does not only depend on my desire, but on my health and appearance.

Reporter: Zhenya, what is your feeling after traveling all around the world for competitions? Where do you find the audience most rewarding?
Kanaeva: Usually in Spain, Italy and France. However, at the recent WC in Moscow, when I performed in AA, I saw how packed the stand was … There was no free space. So much applause, it seemed millions of people applauding because of you! It gave me enormous support. Thanks to that I had everything turned out nicely.

Note: The next competition for Evgenia Kanaeva is World Cup Montreal which will be held on January 2011.
(Zoe’s note: It should be Koop Cup-23 Jan, 2011 @Toronto, Canada)

Evgenia Kanaeva:
Zoe Wan
01-12-2010 at http://www.omsk.aif.ru/sport/article/16362

World Cup Montreal.

“Gimnasia Rítmica Yecla”(Spanish RG club) arranged a special training with the Rhythmic Gymnastics Champion Evgenia Kanaeva.
Original video link: http://informativos.teleyecla.com/index.php?q=node%2F2288

English translated by Laura, many many thanks 🙂 (L)

Reporter: When did you start playing Rhythmic Gymnastics?
Zhenya: I started when I was 6, now I’m 20 so I have been doing gymnastics for 14 years.

R: And what about the perfect age to start with this sport? Six years old… the perfect age?
Zhenya: There isn’t a specific time. Some girls started out as gymnasts when they are 6 and others when they are 8…It depends on the ability of each gymnast.

R: You’re so young now. A 20 year-old girl is used to going out with friends. What does it mean for you? What sacrifices have you made? What kind of things you can’t do?
Zhenya: I actually think I don’t give up anything. I’m just doing which I like and this doesn’t mean I have to stop doing some things.

R: In the last World Championships Russia won 8 of the 9 gold medals. You won 2 of them, in ball and hoop. Are these apparatus the most comfortable for you? Are they your best ones?
Zhenya: No, I’m the AA gold medalist which is the most important competition. Gymnastics is an Olympic sport, so the AA competition is the most important. Apparatus finals have less importance.

Evgenia Kanaeva, World Champion, Olympic Champion and winner of three last European Championships showed the girls how to perform some of the training elements of Rhythmic Gymnastics.
At the end and between all the enthusiastic girls, The Mayor presented the best World’s rhythmic gymnastics with a commemorative plaque.

Mayor: I and people of Yecla are so proud of the visit of the World Champion Evgenia Kanaeva. She has proved us what she is able to do and maybe one day, some of this girls will able to do if they continued working hard like Evgenia has done.
I want to congratulate Evgenia. You’re welcome to Yecla where a lot of girls play gymnastics and, who knows…maybe one day they can become a real champion like you are. You’re a pride and an example to follow. Thank you so much for you visit.

(Laura’s Note): We all know Zhenya’s answers. When I was watching the video I thought some of the questions were so trivial… I’m sure the journalist has never heard about Evgenia and even gymnastics. It really angers me. People don’t realize what kind of efforts gymnast do! When I went to the Euskalgym and I was queuing one guy said: “Wow! A lot of people here! And they are going to see some girls dancing” I became very angry and I said “SOME GIRLS”?? Dancing??!! OMG, they are the best gymnasts in our World! I really thought about giving him my ticket so he could see the amazing spectacle they showed!

And this is the story about this traing camp that Laura told me, Big thanks Laura again!!!

The day before The Euskalgym, Zhenya was in Sardinia (zoe note: Zhenya was in Italy to attend an AG competiton-Freddy Cup. She was there to do an exhibition show in breaktime). On sunday she travelled to Madrid and then she went to Bilbao. She arrived at 5pm and about 7pm she was performing on the carpet! Later, she travelled to Alicante and she was training there for a week. Spanish club Montemar had planned a training with Zhenya which would take place on Friday and on Saturday, Zhenya would be the coach of some girls. But on Tuesday Russian Federation called her because she had to attend a meeting with Russian President, so she flew to Moscow and on Thu. she returned back to Spain. But on Fri. she became ill and she couldn’t train the girls!! ( Only on saturday).

Zhenya was named “Best 10 athletes of Russia”+ “Top 100 Rear view of athletes”

Two news:
1. Zhenya was named “Best 10 Athletes of Russia 2010” by “russian reporter”
Zhenya ranked 2nd, first was Aliya Mustafina. the list were voted by journalists, coaches, expert in sports, sports officials etc…
Zhenya was named Best 10 for three consecutive years (2008-2010). Congratulations Zhenya!!!
Here’s the news link:
http://www.expert.ru/russian_reporter/2010/49/luchshij-sportsmen-2010-goda/
2. a funny voting by a russian website-“Top 100 Rear View of athletes”, the voting started from Mar. 2010
Zhenya placed 9th, first was tennis player-Serena Williams, Kabaeva was 14th, and Melitina Staniouta was 54th
here’s the Top 100 list:
http://www.bolshoisport.ru/behind

BTW, I think the back photo of
Zhenya that the website posted was not beautifual, IMO the best choice
should be “heart ribbon” that one taken by RC.

http://cid-4784f9bd19fde249.photos.live.com/self.aspx/.res/4784F9BD19FDE249!8879/4784F9BD19FDE249!9320

If choose her pics from this year then I think this one from Euskalgym is not bad, can see the back of her leotard very clearly, it’s beautiful-a gymnast with a pink ball

Video translation-Zhenya in Novogorsk

————-

At the beginning, the news reporter (the man) mentioned how people explained where they lived: apartments, houses, hotels, etc. However, ‘for Evgenia Kanaeva, her answer to this question is Novogorsk. She is the great gymnast who has won all. After every victory, she returns to this base. It is not difficult to explain why if you yourself are not surrounded by the best, there is not a chance for anything. This is the environment where Kanaeva lives in.’ Then, the report went on to talk about foreign representatives visiting Novogorsk.

At 1.36, the reporter (the woman) introduced Zhenya as the ‘undisputed queen of RG’, then Zhenya said, ‘home, I think Novogorsk has become my home.’

At 1.44, ‘as the OG champion, you can see her picture nicely shown on the outside of the whole building. The question about where to find the place for gymnastics is right away answered.’ Then the receptionist asked, ‘you come to ask for who?’ The reporter then said, ‘the surname Kanaeva automatically will spell itself out as she is the well-known champion. Her pictures are hanged on the wall of the corridor showing the pride of our sport.’

Then the restaurant is shown. At 2.20, the reporter said this restaurant cooked some of Zhenya’s favourite food but as a gymnast she could not eat as she wanted. Then Zhenya said (with a laughing face), ‘I love eating very much. No matter what, I love to eat. There is no limit.’

Then, the director explained the need of making Novogorsk like home for the athletes, ie. develop a sense of belonging.

At 3.07, Zhenya said, ‘native land?  It is the hall. (laugh) Already like a native land because everyday most of the time I spend in the hall.’

Then, the report talked about Zhenya’s training schedule, ie. from morning till evening.

At. 4.03, Zhenya said, ‘lay down, relax.’ In a different room, Zhenya said, ‘these are the seats, better if always with music playing.’
and then Zhenya joked and said the sauna was cold (because it was not heat up yet – catts’ comment!)

After the bath tub, Zhenya said the use of these facilities needs to be reserved beforehand. Otherwise, the place will be packed.

To finish off, the reporter said something like, ’with the busy training schedule, again the OG champion will be left without lunch. There are also photo sessions and other stuff, so, even with all these fancy facilities for relaxation, she will struggle to find time to enjoy them … ‘
