Sportswoman of the year
Evgenia Kanaeva, Olympic champion in Rhythmic Gymnastics
Evgenia Kanaeva has accomplished what neither Alina Kabaeva, nor anybody else in the history of Rhythmic Gymnastics managed to accomplish – became two-time individual all-around Olympic champion. In Beijing, she flew to the top, and in London she demonstrated that nobody else is getting there for a long time.
“Four years ago, Zhenya was still very young. She was only 17, (note by Zoe, should be 18, not 17)- Kanaeva’s personal coach Vera Shtelbaums tells MN that in Beijing it was easier than in London. – She did not fully understand where she was competing, what she was doing. And the responsibility did nor weigh down that heavily. This time, it was a completely different thing. Zhenya had a title of the Olympic champion. She could not perform worse, so she was a lot more nervous”.
An athlete of unique talent, Evgenia Kanaeva could very well win in Rio in four years, but has recently announced her retirement from the sport. Soon after there spread the news of Kanaeva’s wedding with the hockey-player Igor Musatov. At the same time, a couple more days later, Irina Viner disavowed Kanaeva’s announcement that she had left the sport for good.
VM daily
Evgenia Kanaeva
Age: 22
Sport: rhythmic gymnastics
Evegnia Kanaeva is a worthy heiress for the fame of many of her great predecessors, many of whom she has already superseded. Her all-around victory has made Evgenia the first in history two-time Olympic champion in this type of competition. Many representatives of popular magazines are standing in line to get such a glamorous young lady on board. But Kanaeva decided to continue working for the good of her favorite sport and became a vice-president of Russian Rhythmic Gymnastics Federation.
the rest of the top 5: Anastasia Davydova (synchronized swimming)、Sergei Grankin (volleyball)、Alexander Ovechkin (hockey)、Aliya Mustafina (Artistic Gymnastics)
(note by Zoe: it’s ridiculous they put Dmitrieva’s photo in this article instead of Zhenya…
to Deekay, it’s just Irina Viner doesn’t accept or doesn’t want to face Zhenya’s retirement. Not that important imo. That’s Zhenya’s life, and she has annouced retirement, she doesn’t need anyone’s approval.
I didn’t post that interview of Irina Viner on ZKG, Irina Viner says, she hasn’t talked and doesn’t want to talk with Zhenya about her retirement, Viner says she thinks Zhenya still hasn’t decided yet…even Zhenya has announced it, but since she hasn’t talked and doesn’t want to talk with Zhenya about retirement, then how can she says Zhenya hasn’t decided yet. Anyway only Zhenya can represent herself, that’s why I didn’t post Viner’s interview on ZKG
